Debates about whether machines can be 'creative' tend to founder on the unexamined assumption that creativity is a single, stable quality. In practice, what we call creativity in a human artist bundles together several quite different capacities: the ability to recombine existing patterns in novel ways, the willingness to violate conventions deliberately, the sensitivity to an audience's evolving expectations, and — perhaps most elusively — the capacity to care whether the work matters at all. Contemporary generative systems excel unambiguously at the first of these; they can also, with suitable prompting, perform something that looks like the second. The third capacity they approximate through statistical proxies, which is not quite the same thing. The fourth, so far as anyone can tell, remains outside their reach. Whether that final absence is a temporary engineering gap or a categorical limit is the question that divides researchers most sharply, and it is not one that any amount of benchmark-chasing seems likely to settle.
